At the 58th FRP CON-EX2013, the research group of Professor Limin Bao and Specially Appointed Professor Kiyoshi Kenmochi received an award for their paper "Development of the molding methods of FRTP to achieve a high fiber volume fraction" from the Japan Reinforced Plastics Society.
Fiber reinforced composite materials (FRP, using thermoplastic resin) has high strength and is used in a wide range of fields. FRP is difficult to recycle, so interest is being focused on the use of thermoplastic resins which can be easily reused as the parent material. In the methods of forming continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics (FRTP) used to date, the fiber content was lower than that of FRP, and the strength was also about 1/3 that of FRP. This report proposes a method of forming FRTP having a fiber content similar to that of FRP.
