Tsunami history of the past 7300 years from deposits in Beppu Bay

A coring survey conducted in the Oh-enji marsh in Oita City to analyze sediment core samples up to a depth of 8.8 m to elucidate the history of tsunamis from the past 7300 years was published in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews on May 1st. The research group included Assistant Professor Masaki Yamada of the Department of Geology, Shinshu University, Associate Professor Shigehiro Fujino of the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Tsukuba, and Assistant Professor Takashi Chiba of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, Rakuno Gakuen University.
Historical records show the tsunami caused by the 1596 CE Keicho Bungo Earthquake inflicted enormous damage to the coastal areas in Beppu Bay. This study revealed that tsunami deposits were recorded in the Oh-enji marsh and that tsunamis had repeatedly occurred in Beppu Bay over the years.
