Overview

Seeking to educate a future workforce of doctors who can respond to the needs of the modern age, the Graduate School of Medicine and the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Technology doctoral programs have been integrated, reorganized, and reestablished as the Graduate School of Medicine, Science and Technology.
The Graduate School of Medicine, Science and Technology has been structured into three departments. The first two, the Department of Medical Sciences and the Department of Science and Technology, correspond to the foundations of the academic system and are a reorganization of the three majors of the former graduate departments and their subdivisions. In addition, the Department of Biomedical Engineering has been established as a collaboration of science, engineering, agriculture, textiles, and medicine.
Particularly notable is that this is the first curriculum in Japan in the departments of medical science or biomedical engineering to award a 4-year (doctorate [medicine]) degree and 3-year (doctorate [heath sciences]) or doctoral [medical engineering]) degree under one department.

Features

In order to tackle complex issues that are not easily resolved, in addition to in-depth expertise and the skills required to resolve core technical problems, it is also essential to possess the comprehensive insight and vision necessary to view the issues and explore solutions from a broad range of different perspectives.
In order to foster comprehensive problem-solving skills and understanding, it is essential to have knowledge of other areas related to one's field of expertise as well as a basic overall knowledge in the medical field, science, technology, the agricultural field, and the humanities.
Therefore, all of the students in each department take Departmental Common Subjects (a selection of 4 units is compulsory in all departments) as well as the Graduate School's "Graduate School Common Subjects" (a selection of 2 units is compulsory in all departments).
All enrolled graduate students are required to obtain CITI-Japan certification in addition to the graduation requirements, and we also aim to instill a sense of social responsibility with courses in ethics for researchers and engineers.

In addition to employing in-depth knowledge and outstanding technical skills in specialized fields to leverage the benefits of a wide array of academic fields ranging from medicine to science and technology to biomedical engineering, the Graduate School seeks to offer educational and research programs that will cultivate a workforce of doctors with an overview of issues outside their own areas of expertise and the kind of comprehensive vision needed to reaffirm the social significance of their own research topics, as well as sound ethics and the ability both to penetrate to the root of a problem to find a solution and to apply their skills in the discovery of new findings and technologies in areas related to their specialized fields.

Curriculum Policy

Graduate School of Medicine, Science and Technology follows the philosophy of the university and the educational and research goals of the graduate school. The graduate school sets a goal to cultivate students who will possess following knowledge and abilities that should be needed for highly skilled professionals or researchers in the field of Medical Sciences, Science and Technology, and Biomedical Engineering;

?deep academic knowledge and outstanding skills in specialized research fields,

?bird's eye view for issues outside specialized research fields as well as recognizing the social significance of their own research issues,

?insight to identify the essence of issues and find the solutions, and

?applied skills to find new knowledge and technology for issues close to specialized research fields.

For these purposes, the graduate school implements a highly specialized curriculum centered on an academic dissertation preparation together with lectures, exercises, experiments, and practical training according to the following curriculum organization and implementation policy.

  • The graduate school establishes classes necessary to achieve the educational goals of the graduate school, develop a research guidance plan, and organize the curriculum systematically.
  • The graduate school organizes systematic curriculum that can acquire deep academic knowledge and outstanding skills in specialized research fields.
  • The graduate school offers following classes;

    ?graduate school common classes that aims to acquire bird's eye view for issues outside specialized research fields as well as recognizing the social significance of their own research issues, and

    ?department common classes that aim to acquire insight to identify the essence of issues and find the solutions, and applied skills to find new knowledge and technology for issues close to specialized research fields while enhancing their expertise.

  • Grade rating shall be given based on the level of achievement toward the objectives and goals listed in each class based on the Diploma Policy to ensure fairness and transparency in grade evaluation.

    【Evaluation method】
    - As for lectures, the level of achievement toward the objectives and goals shall be judged by written tests or reports to measure comprehension, as well as the degree of attendance.

    - As for exercises, experiments, practical training, and practical skill subjects, the level of achievement toward the objectives and goals shall be judged through the degree of attendance, presentation contents, and practical skills in addition to written tests or reports.

    - The level of achievement toward the objectives and goals of classes shall be judged by multiple evaluation methods as far as possible.

  • The graduate school shall enrich the Doctral dissertation review system, conduct strict and transparent dissertation review, and carry out completion judgment.

Diploma Policy

Pursuant to the university's philosophy and the educational goals of the Graduate School, the Graduate School of Medicine, Science and Technology will award a doctoral degree to students who have sufficiently developed the following knowledge, capabilities, and skills and possess the knowledge, capabilities and skills to meet the degree-granting policy prescribed by each Department.
