Department of Biomedical Engineering
Overview
The Department of Engineering trains those who will one day be responsible for research and development in biology, medicine, health, and welfare in order to extend healthy life expectancy in this super-aging society.
To achieve this goal, science and technology students and medical students belong to the same department and work together as one in the study of biomedical engineering acquiring perspectives and research methods from different fields at this truly collaborative medical engineering graduate school we have established.
Both the Biotechnology Division and Biomedical Engineering Division offer a 3-year course that awards a (biomedical engineering) doctoral degree and a 4-year course that awards a (medical) doctoral degree.

Features
The Department of Biomedical Engineering provides an education founded on high-level multi-faceted research through cooperation with the Interdisciplinary Cluster for Cutting-Edge Research. In addition, we are training a future global workforce by actively participating in education and research with Distinguished Visiting Professors and international researchers at the Graduate School and through our extensive study abroad program. The instructors at this University work together as one with instructors at other domestic and overseas universities, doctors at medical institutions, front-line company researchers, staff at government organizations, and others for the purpose of education and research. Through this multi-faceted integration and cooperation, the graduate school is able to produce researchers who communicate new findings in borderline areas to the world and an innovative future workforce with the broad outlook needed in this modern age and the competence to take the lead in collaborative research between industry, academia and government.
Philosophy and Goals
The educational and research goals of the Department of Biomedical Engineering are to implement practical research education that reaches beyond the borders of the academic disciplines of science, technology and medicine, to cultivate a future highly specialized workforce who can contribute to the development of biomedical engineering both domestically and globally, to provide students with highly sophisticated expert knowledge and outstanding technical skills through developments in education and research that can only be achieved through a broad range of coursework based on a collaboration between [sophisticated fields of] medicine and science and technology in borderline areas along with comprehensive vision, insight, and the ability to apply their skills, to cultivate cooperative biomedical engineering researchers with a strong sense of ethics, and to undertake essential cutting-edge research in the fields of biomedical engineering in order to achieve that.
Target Human Resources
- Scientific researchers and highly specialized engineers who have acquired a sense of bioscience and medicine, and medical researchers and highly specialized medical workers who have acquired a sense of science and technology, having overcome the differences in the backgrounds of science and engineering and medicine.
- Highly skilled professionals taking on multi-faceted roles in a variety of fields while drawing on knowledge and technical skills acquired through collaborative biomedical engineering research in different fields that have been integrated.
- Skilled people who can contribute to helping Japan continue leading the world in areas such as regenerative medicine, drug development, food products, and preventative medicine by driving biomedical engineering research forward.
Skills Instilled
In addition to the common comprehensive vision and sound ethical perspective acquired at this Graduate School, the following will also be acquired as common skills over the course of a program designed to produce highly skilled professionals and researchers, including highly specialized medical professionals and engineers, able to contribute to society by utilizing in-depth knowledge and technical skills in the specialized fields of biomedical engineering combined with the ability to respond flexibly to societal changes.

Curriculum Policy
Pursuant to the educational goals of the Graduate School and the Department, the Department of Biomedical Engineering will implement the following highly specialized curriculum consisting of lectures, lessons, experiments, and practicums according to the following curriculum policy centered on dissertation writing with the goal of attaining in-depth knowledge, outstanding technical skills, insight, and the ability to apply the skills required by highly skilled professionals and researchers in the field of biomedical engineering, which is an integration of medical science, science and engineering.
- In addition to the establishment of the classes required to achieve the educational goals of this Department, the formulation of a research guidance plan and the organization of a systematic curriculum.
- In organizing the curriculum, specialized subjects will be offered in both the science and engineering 3-year course and medical science 4-year course to help students attain in-depth expert knowledge and outstanding technical skills in the divisions of the Department.
- Departmental common classes will be offered so that students acquire broad-ranging knowledge in borderline areas that characterize biomedical engineering, and so that they can acquire insight and the ability to apply their skills.
Diploma Policy
Pursuant to the educational goals of the Graduate School and the Department, the Department of Biomedical Engineering will award a doctoral degree to students who have sufficiently developed the following knowledge and capabilities and possess the knowledge and capabilities required by the degree-granting policy issued by each Division
- In-depth knowledge and outstanding technical skills in one's specialized division of the integrated areas of medicine and science and technology.
- The insight to identify the essence of a problem in the integrated areas of medicine and science and technology and to find solutions.
- The ability to apply one's skills to produce new findings and technologies in areas related to one's specialized division of medicine or science and technology.
Admissions Policy
Pursuant to the educational goals of the Graduate School and the Department, the Department of Biomedical Engineering welcomes students who demonstrate the following capabilities and drive.
- Those who aim to become researchers or highly skilled professionals specializing in biomedical engineering or biotechnology in the borderline areas of science, technology and medical sciences.
- Those with a desire to acquire expertise in innovation management, intellectual property, regulatory science, etc. in order to work as government officials, research administrators, or clinical development monitors.
- Those with a strong desire to create new industries and lead the world in academia by acquiring expertise and technical skills in borderline areas and by becoming familiar with a broad range of sophisticated science.
