Using?a?computer?to?examine?the?properties?of?substances?in?a?“dry?lab,”?therebyperforming?chemistry?without?experimentationDeveloping?new?luminescent?materials?and?energy‐storing?materials?using?nanocarbon35Department?of?Chemistry?and?MaterialsDepartment?of?Chemistry?and?MaterialsOutlookforresearchOutlook?for?students?after?graduationOutlookforresearchOutlook?for?students?after?graduationIamexaminingnumerousproperties,includingopticalproperties,withoutactuallycarryingoutexperimentsbyperformingmolecularcomputationbasedonquantumchemistry.Thisapproachmakesitpossibletounderstandthetruenatureofthosepropertiesandtodiscovertherootsofthepropertiesofthesubstancesonewishestoinvestigate.Currently,mylabisfocusingitsresearchprimarilyoncarbonsubstancessuchasfullerenes.Currently,organicsynthesisusingmolecularcomputationtopredictreactionpathwayshasbeenaddressedinthescientificliterature.Inthisway,researchersexpectthatbycalculatinganefficientreactioninadvance,itwillbepossibletocarryoutexperimentswithoutwastingtestreagentsortime.Whilegraduatespursuenumerouscareerpaths,manyaimtobecomesystemengineers,teachers,orpublicofficials.ProfessorYasushiNomuraProfessorNomuratookhiscurrentpositionin2020afterworkingintheFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversityasanassistantprofessorandanassociateprofessor.Hisareaoffocusistheoreticalchemistrybasedonquantumchemistry.Recently,hehasbeenresearchingtheelectronicpropertiesofcarbonmaterialssuchasfullerenes,theglowofcertainorganicmolecules,andtheirquenchingprocess.One?subject?my?lab?is?investigating?is?carbon?nanotubes.Thereareabundantelectronsinthelargeredandblueareasofthismolecularorbitalmodelrelatedtoelectrondistributionforacertainfullerene.Iamcarryingoutresearchtosynthesizefluorescentnanocarbonandtousenanocarbon(carbonnanotubes,graphene,carbonnano‐horns,etc.)inenergy‐storagedevices(primaryandsecondarylithiumbatteriesandsupercapacitors).Myresearchcoversawiderangeoftopics,fromfundamentalstoapplications.Potentialapplicationsforthisresearcharegrowinginnumberandincludedrivepowersourcesforelectricvehicles,next‐generationbio‐imagingmaterials,andcleaninggasesforsemiconductorsthatareenvironmentallyfriendlyandenergy‐efficient.Graduatesseekemploymentatchemicalcompanies,particularlycompaniesinvolvedincarbonmaterials,electrochemicals,andfluorinechemistry,orasteachersorpublicofficials.ProfessorYoshiyukiHattoriProfessorHattoritookhiscurrentpositionafterworkingasaresearcherinvolvedincollaborationamongindustry,academia,andgovernmentintheChibaUniversityFacultyofScience,asaseniorassistantprofessor,andasanassociateprofessorintheFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversity.Heiscurrentlyengagedinbasicresearchincarbonscienceandinorganicfluorinechemistry,includingresearchontheapplicationsofnanocarbonasanelectrodematerialandasanadsorptionmaterial.My?lab?succeeded?in?synthesizing?fluorescent?nanocarbon,?whose?applications?include?use?in?imaging?materials.We?also?succeeded?in?synthesizing?porous?carbon?nano‐sheets,?whose?potential?uses?include?capacitors?and?electrodes?in?high‐output?secondary?lithium?batteries.
