Developing?cutting‐edge?polymer?particles?and?pursuing?science?in?the?mysterious?world?of?the?micro‐scale500 nmDevelopment?of?Functional?Polymeric?Materials?for?Bio‐Applications40Department?of?Chemistry?and?MaterialsDepartment?of?Chemistry?and?MaterialsOutlookforresearchOutlookforresearchOutlook?for?students?after?graduationIamworkingtodevelopfunctionalpolymerparticles,atypeofmaterialthatisbotholdandnewandthatpromisesapplicationsinpaintsandinksandincomponentsforcutting‐edgematerials.Inmyresearch,Ifirstdesignfunctionalparticles,proposenewsynthesismethods,properlyevaluatetheresultingparticles,and,finally,considerthepossibleapplicationsinwhichtheycanbeexpectedtoplayausefulrole.Ihopetoconsultwithscientiststhroughouttheworldtounderstandthenano‐space,whichisinvisibletothenakedeye,andtocreatematerialsthatwillenrichourdailylives.Mygoalisforstudentstoexperiencethejoyofcreatingthingsduringtheirschoolyearstogivethemaninterestinscience.AssociateProfessorDaisukeSuzukiAfterobtaininghisdoctorate(inengineering)atKeioUniversity,AssociateProfessorSuzukiworkedasaresearcherattheGeorgiaInstituteofTechnologyandattheUniversityofTokyo,andasanassistantprofessorundertheShinshuUniversityYoungResearchersEmpowermentProjectbeforetakinghiscurrentposition2013.Hespecializesinpolymerchemistry,colloidchemistry,andmaterialchemistry.Whilethisliquidlooksataglancelikemilk,herewearedispersingpolymerparticlesinnormalwater.Theparticles,whichareinvisibletothenakedeye,looklikethiswhenviewedthroughanelectronmicroscope.Eachparticlehasadiameterof400nm.Outlook?for?students?after?graduationThebodyidentifiesartificialmaterialsasforeignobjectsandattemptstoeliminatethemfromthebodyandneutralizeanyharmfuleffects.Consequently,thinkingof,anddeveloping,newpolymermaterialsthataremorecompatiblewithlivingorganismsareextremelyimportantstepsinthetreatmentofnumerousdiseases.Mylabisworkingtodevelopartificialextracellularmatrices(ECM)thatusenaturalmaterialssuchasproteinsandpolysaccharidesasrawmaterials.Clinicalapplicationsforthesematerialsareexpectedtoincludeusesinregenerativemedicine.Graduatesareprimarilyemployedbymaterialandchemicalmanufacturers,althoughsomeworkatcompaniesinvolvedinmedicalequipmentorpursueclinicalapplicationssuchasregenerativemedicine.AssociateProfessorAkiraTeramotoAssociateProfessorTeramototookhiscurrentpositionin2008afterworkingasaresearcherataprivatedairycompanyandasaresearchassociateandassistantprofessorintheFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversity.Hisareasofresearchincludethedevelopmentofsubstratesforcellculturingandthefunctionalevaluationofculturedcells.Osteoblasts?from?mice?cultured?on?a?non‐woven?material?made?from?cellulose?nanofibersTissuecellsareculturedoveralongperiodoftimeusingapetridishwhosebottomiscoatedwiththematerialwecreated,andthentheyarekeptinadevicethatmaintainssanitaryconditionssothatwecanexaminetheirfunctionality.
