18ProfessorNATSUKIToshiakiProfessorNatsukitookhiscurrentpositionin2020afterworkingasaresearcheratHitachiChemical’sTsukubaResearchandDevelopmentCenter,theNationalInstituteofScienceandTechnology,andtheNewEnergyandDevelopmentIndustrialOrganization.Hisofresearchincludethecreationofcompositematerials,compositematerialengineering,andcomputationalsciencefortheanalysisandevaluationoftheirproperties.ProfessorWAKATSUKIKaoruAftercompletionofPh.D.attheUniv.ofMarylandintheU.S.,hehadworkedforNat’lRes.Inst.ofFireandDisasterasaresearchscientistandafireinvestigatorbeforejoiningShinshuUniv.in2023.Hisexpertiseisthermalandfireprotectionitsapplicationofpersonalprotection.Ourlabconductsscientificresearchon(1)understandingfiredynamicsandfirefighters’workingenvironment,(2)heattransferprocessinfirefighters’personalprotectionequipment(PPE),(3)developmentandrevisiononstandardfiretestsandthermalperformancerequirementofmaterialandPPEand(4)developmentofnewfirefighterPPE.Finally,researchonfireprotectionformaterialsandpeopleisoneofourobjectives,butouressentialgoalistoeducatefirefighters(emergencyresponders)aboutbetterunderstandingoffundamentaloffireriskandphysicswithinPPEfortheirsafeoperation.Ifocusonstudyingthemechanicalpropertiesofcarbonnanotubes(CNTs),forexampleelasticity,vibration,andbuckling,andusingtheCNTstodevelophigh-functionalitynanocompositematerials.MylableveragestheuniquepropertiesofCNT,whichcannotbeachievedwithothermaterials,tocreatelightweightandhighlyfunctionalCNT-strengthenedcompositematerialsandtoutilizetheminnumerousways.AdvancedIndustrialTechnologyprincipalareasfederalengineeringandDepartment of Department of andEvaluation of firefighter clothing by flash fire manikin.
