The 22th International Seminar:
"Impact of risk factors on oxidative stress and cardiovascular disease" by Prof. Henning Morawietz, Technische Universität Dresden, Germany
24.01.17
Oxidative stress is deeply involved in cell death and inflammation, and oxidative stress produced in vascular endothelial cells promotes arteriosclerosis. Prof. Henning Morawietz, from the Department of Medicine III, Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), Germany, who specializes in microcirculation and vascular biology, is an old friend of Prof. SAWAMURA Tatsuya, the Department of Molecular Pathology in Shinshu University School of Medicine. Prof. Morawietz is also an enthusiastic supporter of exchanges between TUD and Shinshu University. This seminar was realized on the occasion of his first visit to Shinshu University after the COVID-19 disaster.
Moderated by Prof. SAWAMURA, Prof. Morawietz gave a lecture on the latest research results on the mechanism of oxidative stress production in vascular endothelial cells and the relationship between arteriosclerosis. On the day of the event, it was a hybrid of face-to-face and online lectures. More than 30 students, graduate students, doctors, and researchers participated in the seminar. Associate Professor TOMITA Takuro (Department of Molecular Pharmacology), Associate Professor MORI Masayuki and Dr. FUJII Chifumi (both the Institute for Biomedical Sciences) and many students asked questions and the discussion heated up.
This seminar held in collaboration with the Institute for Biomedical Sciences, Shinshu University, and we were able to understand the latest findings in arteriosclerosis research. We will continue to provide opportunities to experience the world's cutting-edge research and to expand the perspective of researchers at Shinshu University School of Medicine to the world.
Prof. TANAKA Naoki, Director of International Relations Office and Department of Global Medical Research Promotion, Shinshu University School of Medicine

Impact of risk factors on oxidative stress and cardiovascular diseases

Division of Vascular Endothelium and Microcirculation, Department of Medicine III, Technische Universität Dresden, Germany
【Abstract】
Important risk factors of cardiovascular diseases are hypertension, obesity, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and smoking. They can induce oxidative stress and cardiovascular diseases. This talk will focus on mechanisms regulating the cross talk between risk factors and oxidative stress in the cardiovascular system. My group is investigating the role of NADPH oxidases as major sources of reactive oxygen species in the vessel wall. We use human endothelial cells, transgenic models and clinical studies to get a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular diseases.
