Vision for Contributing to and Cooperating with Society
The university is highly focused on advancing the cooperation/coordination between itself and each related field by opening itself to the public in order to conserve Shinshu's natural environment, succeed and develop its history/culture, improve the welfare of each individual, and resolve the concrete issues regarding industrial development.
No.2 in the universities' local contribution ranking*!
In November 2023, The NIKKEI released the "Survey on University Contributions to Local Communities" and Shinshu University is ranked second overall. The survey aims to examine how the university contributes to the local communities and settles four categories: "Organizations and Systems" evaluates the university's organization and system; "Students and Local Residents, and Education Systems and Education for Upskilling" focuses on public lectures, community events, local employment for students, and programs for upskilling working adults; "Industries and Governments" considers collaborative research with local governments and businesses and the number of university startup companies; and "SDGs and Global" refers to efforts related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and internationalization.
Shinshu University has always ranked in the top spot in the survey, and we hope to use this evaluation as an opportunity to further promote activities that contribute to the community.

Lifelong Learning Services
Open Classes for Citizens
Approximately 800 of the regular classes that students take each year (at the Center for General Education and in eight faculties) are open to the public. Approximately 300 students attend these classes in the first and second semesters each year.
Visiting Lectures
In response to requests from community centers, lifelong learning institutions, schools and other public institutions and organizations, our university's faculty members travel to various parts of the prefecture to give approximately 140 lectures a year, with approximately 10,000 students attending.
Public Lectures
These classes are open to the general public, including local residents. We offer a variety of classes for elementary and junior high school students as well as the elderly.
University Hospital
Prefectural Cancer Treatment Center
In August 2006, Shinshu University Hospital was designated a Prefectural Cancer Treatment Center by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. The "Comprehensive Cancer Center" had served as a center for treating patients with malignancies. With a view to achieving further developments in cancer therapy, the conventional "Comprehensive Cancer Center" was dissolved into the "Shinshu Cancer Center" in April 2013. The "Shinshu Cancer Center" provides comprehensive cancer therapy, supportive care and cancer registration. The center was accredited as a designated cancer genomics hospital in October 2019 and since April 2020 has been providing cancer genomics medical care and laying the groundwork for "Bio-Bank Shinshu".
Treatment Information Sharing via the Shinshu Medical Net Using ICT
Sharing regional treatment information (with patient approval) with multiple medical institutions using ICT, we work with the relevant medical institutions to ensure a clear understanding of testing, diagnosis, treatment plans, and the overview of treatment plans, and utilize this information in the treatment provided at the University Hospital. The goal is safe and advanced medical treatment, and better quality treatment for the community as a whole.
Center for Disaster Mitigation and Prevention
Center for Disaster Mitigation and Prevention promotes systematically education and research related to regional disaster prevention and mitigation, taking advantage of the results of the research related to the mechanisms of disaster occurred, etc., and strengthening disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities working with local community.
