Professor Mitsuhisa Komatsu and others from the Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine Receive 50th Baelz Prize

Professor Mitsuhisa Komatsu and others of the Department of Internal Medicine (Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism) of the School of Medicine, Shinshu University have received the second prize of the 50th Baelz Prize for “Glucose-stimulated Insulin Secretion and Incretin : Toward Physiological Understanding”. The research results over the past 25 years into the mechanism of insulin secretion from pancreatic β cells in this paper were highly evaluated. The other joint researchers were Associate Professor Yoshihiko Sato of the same department, and Shinshu University Professor Emeritus Toru Aizawa, Consultant to the Diabetes Center of the Aizawa Hospital.
The purpose of the Baelz Prize is to commemorate the historical relationship of exchange in the medical field between Japan and Germany, and to further deepen this relationship. It is a traditional medical prize that was established by Boehringer Ingelheim in 1964, so this was the 50th year since the prize was established. In the past 50 times prizes have been awarded to 113 papers, but this is the first time the prize has been awarded to a paper from Shinshu University.
