On 26th September 2014, the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) announced the selection of new topics for the Core Research for Evolutional Science and Technology (CREST), in which the research topic "A Novel Approach to Drug Discovery through Receptor Activity Modification" by Professor Takayuki Shindo of the Department of Cardiovascular Research of the Graduate School of Medicine was selected.
CREST is a program for team-oriented research with the aim of achieving the strategic goals set forth by the government. The objective is to create revolutionary technological seeds for science and technology innovation by promoting basic research focused on achieving goals.
Bioactive humoral molecules play central roles in the regulation of homeostasis as the method for communication by cells and organs. On the other hand, cells and organs have control system for the information transmitted by the bioactive molecules.
Professor Takayuki Shindo's team has discovered that diversity of physiological function of bioactive molecules such as adrenomedullin (AM) is produced by the "RAMP system", which works as the major control system for information transmitted by the bioactive molecules. In this research, the research results for the maintenance of homeostatic mechanism of the RAMP system and the disease initiation mechanisms caused by stress response damage will be used for the drug discovery.
