On November 9th, 2015, Professor Hiroshi Kagami of the Faculty of Agriculture gave a special lecture in the UK entitled, “The Current State of Life Science Research in Japan and Support Systems for Research.” This lecture was jointly hosted by University College London and the London Center of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
Professor Kagami has long been involved in an academic exchange with Professor Claudio Stern of University College London, and was able to give this lecture courtesy of an invitation from Professor Stern.
Professor Stern is one of the leading authorities in the field of life sciences in the UK, and has held important posts at several eminent institutions, including as a member of the Royal Society, as a member of the Royal Society of Medicine, and as president of the International Society of Developmental Biologists.
The lecture, which generated much lively debate, was attended not only by members of University College London but also those from the University of Cambridge along with Japanese researchers currently resident in the UK.
Professor Kagami also currently serves a concurrent position as a program officer at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Research Center for Science Systems (https://www.jsps.go.jp/j-center/po.html (in Japanese)). Given this, following the lecture, he held a separate discussion in Professor Stern’s laboratory on the current state of life science research in Japan and the UK and the creativity of the research that is coming from these countries.
During this session, Professor Stern and Professor Kagami reaffirmed their commitment to continuing their research exchanges into the future.
