Dr. Toshiro Fukushima and Professor Tomonobu Koizumi of the Department of Comprehensive Cancer Therapy, Shinshu University School of Medicine won the Special Recognition Award at the 1st Asia Oceania Workshop of Pulmonary Functional Imaging combined with 8th Japanese Society of Pulmonary Functional Imaging. This workshop was held from January 29 to 31, 2016, on Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture.
The title of their winning presentation is, “Correlation of early PET findings with tumor response to sensitive molecular targeted agents in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer.”
In their research, Dr. Fukushima and Professor Koizumi re-examined a PET test one week after treatment had commenced using the above mentioned agent for non-small cell lung cancer in which genetic mutations had manifested that would serve as targets for molecular targeted agents, such as gefitinib and crizotinib. They then compared the results of this test with the PET they had initially taken prior to treatment. As a result, they demonstrated that there is a significant correlation between the rate of reduction of the SUVmax of tumors during early re-testing and the maximum rate of shrinkage of tumors following ongoing treatment, and that the rate of reduction with PET findings during the early stages of treatment is a factor in predicting the effectiveness of treatment with molecular targeted agents.
