"Establishment of Advanced Research Assistant (ARA) System" as a human resources development of Ph.D. Holders in collaboration between the Industrial Sector and the University

On April 16th, Shinshu University held a press conference on the employment scheme in FY2018, titled “Advanced Research Assistant (ARA) System” that the University has established as a pioneering experiment in Japan. This is a sustainable human resources development for diverse and excellent Ph.D. holders.
Ph.D. holders, who are expected to activate the creation of innovations, have potentials to actively work not only in universities but also industrial sectors and communities. However, the number of corporations that have employed Ph.D. holders remains at as low as approximately 20% across the country. It is because corporations tend to seek for industry-ready human resources to adapt their technical and professional knowledge to the industrial fields or practical skills to enable them to understand the corporate cultures and business sense, etc.
In order to solve the abovementioned issues, this newly established scheme will encourage Ph.D. holders to autonomously participate in the industrial-university collaboration consortium that comprises plural corporations and research institutes. In this consortium, they will be engaged with research and development activities, through the assistance from the joint research funds financed by the participating corporations that would cover their living costs, etc. By this new scheme, human resources that socially implement the results of scientific technology will be supported and developed to contribute to the activation of creative innovations.
This new scheme shall be introduced first to “Implantable/Wearable Medical Device Co-creation Consortium(IMDC)”, a core role of which will be played by Shinshu University within a framework of “Program on Open Innovation Platform with Enterprises, Research Institute and Academia (OPERA)” financed by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) for the period from 2017 to 2021. This scheme will be expanded to every faculties in the University.
