A research group including Dr. Yoshitaka Takano, professor of Graduate School of Agriculture, Kyoto University, postdoctoral fellow Yoshihiro Inoue of the same, Dr. Hiroki Irieda, assistant professor of Shinshu University (Excellent Young Researcher of MEXT), Dr. Masashi Mori, associate professor of Ishikawa Prefectural University elucidated the function of virulence factors secreted by a wide range of plant pathogenic filamentous fungi.
More than 80% of the annual losses of global agricultural production are
caused by filamentous fungi (molds, fungi) . To infect successfully, these plant pathogens secrete various proteins called "effectors" and suppress the host defense responses that are supposed to be activated after pathogen perception. However, it remained unclear which effector played an important role.
The research group elucidated that the effector “NIS1”, which is common to a wide range of phytopathogenic fungi, is attacking the center of the pathogen recognition system in plant immunity. Furthermore, in the rice blast fungus, it has also been confirmed that the loss of NIS1 dramatically reduces the virulence. Through this research achievement, it is expected to lead to the development of new agrichemicals that are effective against a wide range of plant pathogens and can block only their infection strategies.
