The 5th International Workshop on the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings (IWGM 2019) was held at University College Cork, Ireland on 14-16 April, 2019. Representatives from more than 87 of the world’s top universities from 37 countries attended two days of intensive discussions on the theme of “The Sustainable University in a Changing World: Lessons, Challenges and Opportunities”.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, compiled by the Universitas Indonesia, evaluate the measures taken by universities worldwide to create a sustainable campus environment. The indicators employed are drawn from nine of the UN’s 17 SDGs (the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN Summit in 2015). In 2018, Shinshu University was ranked 1st in Japan and 48th in the world.
In the themed sessions at the IWGM2019, presentations were given by representatives from universities that had been highly evaluated in specific categories. Professor Kiyoshi Tanaka, Vice-President of International Affairs and Director of the Global Education Center at Shinshu University, gave a talk on “Student-Centered Environmental Education at Shinshu University, Japan” in the “Environmental Education and Research” session.
The Workshop provided an excellent opportunity for Shinshu University to share information relating to environmental policies with leading universities from all over the world. We will continue to pursue our goal of creating a sustainable campus.
