On April 28, 2021, H.E. Dr. Sinisa Berjan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Japan, paid a courtesy visit to President Hamada. Shinshu University has had a Memorandum of Understanding with Banja Luka University in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 2015.

H.E. Dr. Berjan introduced the University of East Sarajevo (UES), where he was the Vice-Rector for Science and Research Development before becoming Ambassador. UES is a university with 17 faculties and ten campuses, 1,100 faculty members and 11,000 students. With the surrounding mountains, it is very similar to Shinshu University. The Ambassador also mentioned that the ski resorts of Sarajevo and Nagano have both been chosen in the past to host the Winter Olympics. Soon he hopes to establish a center in East Sarajevo to introduce Japanese culture and promote cultural exchange between the two countries.

Regarding collaboration with Shinshu University, H.E. Dr. Berjan showed an interest in agriculture, medicine and mountain science. Opinions were exchanged on the possibility of establishing academic exchanges of both students and researchers, and significant progress was made towards the conclusion of a university-wide agreement.
