"University Coalition for Carbon Neutrality" launches to realize a decarbonized society

Representatives from universities, research institutes, and Japanese ministries participated online

The inaugural meeting of the "University Coalition for Carbon Neutrality" was held online on July 29, 2021. 188 universities and research institutes attended the online meeting including Shinshu University president Kunihiro Hamada.

The coalition evolved from “Carbon Neutrality by 2050” declared by the Japanese government in 2020, which set a goal to realize a decarbonized society by reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions. To meet the highly challenging goal, universities and research institutes should lead the development of technologies and professionals, addressed the representative of the coalition, Juichi Yamagiwa, Director-General of Research Institute for Humanity and Nature. And, representatives of Japanese ministries gave messages to expect universities and research institutes get together to create new scientific knowledge and build successful models in cooperation with businesses and local governments, and develop highly professionals to realize a decarbonized society.

As one of the secretariats of working groups, president Hamada announced that Shinshu University obtained ISO 14001 in 2001 as the first national/ public university in Japan, and was ranked number one Japanese university in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings from 2018 to 2020, a ranking of the world's most environmentally friendly universities. He also expressed his eagerness to tackle regional Carbon Neutrality with Shinshu Uni’s community-based research achievements.
