On December 14, 2022, Prof. Dr. Asylbek Aidaraliev (Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the International University of Kyrgyzstan (IUK), Advisor to the Prime-Minister of the Kyrgyz Government, Academician of the Kyrgyz National Academy of Sciences, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic) and Dr. Maksatbek Anarbaev (Pro-Rector for International Affairs of IUK) visited Shinshu University(SU) and had a meeting with President Nakamura.
Since the inter-university agreement in October 2016, joint research of both universities has been conducted between the Institute for Mountain Science (SU) and IUK, including ecological research on snow leopards and red deer in the Tianshan Mountains of the Kyrgyz Republic and research on animal damage caused by wolves in the country.
In addition to research exchange in mountain science, they exchanged views on the possibility of research collaboration and student exchange in other fields such as medicine.
At the meeting, Prof. Dr. Aidaraliev presented a crafted figure made of the horn of a wild sheep “argali”. The figure of a snow leopard and argali, a species native to the mountainous regions of Central Asia, is a very valuable and prestigious gift in honor of Prof. Shigeyuki Izumiyama’s contributions to mountain science research, who is a Director of the Institute for Mountain Science.
Followed by the meeting, Koji Tojo, Director of the Library, showed the guests around the special mountain-related collection “Kotani Collection” at the Central Library, where are displayed rare books such as a Japanese old map of Mt. Fuji or Atlas of India and High Asia in 1861-1866.
The development of the academic exchange utilizing the characteristics and strengths of both universities' research and education in the future will be expected.
