On July 29, 2024, the opening ceremony of a Shinshu University Satellite Office was held at University of Brawijaya (UB), Indonesia, one of our inter-university academic partners.
Starting from concluding an inter-faculty MoU in 2018 (Faculty of Textile Science and Technology) and another in 2019 (Faculty of Agriculture), SU has been actively collaborating with UB in education and research through mutual dispatch of students, exchange of researchers, collaborative online international learning, and participation in international symposiums hosted by UB. The agreement was upgraded to inter-university level in January 2024, leading to the establishment of the satellite office.
The opening ceremony was attended by President Widodo, Vice President Imam Santoso (Academic Affairs), Vice President Andi Kurniawan (International Affairs), and other faculty and staff from UB, and from SU by Vice President Shinichi Yonekura (International Planning and Strategy), Professor Katsuya Teshima (Director of Institute for Aqua Regeneration), Professor Katsuki Koh, Associate Professor Hirokazu Nagata, and Associate Professor Mitsuru Hamano (Center for Global Education and Collaboration). A video message was delivered by President Soichiro Nakamura.
President Nakamura and Professor Teshima introduced Shinshu University's research projects for "Advancing Aqua Regeneration Research" powered by J-PEAKS (MEXT’s grant: Program for Forming Japan’s Peak Research Universities), such as recycling used water in domestic and industries with the latest purification technology and generation of hydrogen gas from water using clean energy. President Widodo expressed his high expectations for the promotion of joint research.
In addition, Dr. Eko Widodo, Deputy Dean of Faculty of Animal Science, UB, who received a master's degree from the Graduate School of Agriculture, Shinshu University in 2001 and a doctorate from the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Gifu University in 2004, was appointed as a Collaborative Professor for Shinshu University. He has promoted exchanges in research and education between the two universities, and we look forward to his further activities in the future.
The participants also discussed the future promotion of research and educational exchange, and agreed to conduct a new joint field research in Indonesia with SU Faculty of Engineering, as well as to establish a double degree program for master's degree between SU Faculty of Agriculture and UB Faculty of Livestock Science. In addition, SU and Faculty of Humanities, UB, agreed to conduct collaborative online international learning and promote student exchange in the Department of Japanese Language and Literature and the English Department.
The establishment of this satellite office is expected to further expand the fields of exchange and develop future cooperation in such areas as joint research, paper submission, and joint application for research funds.
