1. What made you come train at Shinshu University School of Medicine and how did you find the School through your stay?
Shinshu University School of Medicine stood out to me as an excellent opportunity to gain international medical experience in a country with a highly advanced healthcare system. Luckily, my university offers an exchange program and it was the perfect opportunity to learn more about Japan's approach to medical education, patient care and surgical techniques.
Throughout my stay, I found Shinshu University Hospital to be a well-organized and technologically advanced institution. The faculty members were incredibly knowledgeable and they made significant efforts to involve me in various learning experiences. The hospital provided a diverse range of cases, offering invaluable clinical exposure. The Japanese students and staff were welcoming and their dedication to medicine was truly inspiring.
2. Please describe your training at host department/lab.
During my training, I was involved in the departments of plastic surgery and orthopedic surgery, where I participated in early morning rounds, outpatient consultations, and surgical procedures.
In the Plastic Surgery Department, I gained hands-on experience in procedures such as skin grafts, flap reconstructions and other reconstructive surgeries. I was particularly fascinated by cases of congenital malformations, which required meticulous planning and surgical precision. Additionally, I had the chance to interact with patients pre- and post-operatively, gaining insights into their treatment journeys and rehabilitation processes.
In the Orthopedic Surgery Department, I was exposed to joint replacements and spinal surgeries. I observed how the integration of advanced imaging techniques and cutting-edge surgical instruments contributed to better patient outcomes.
Learning from experts in their respective fields, each with their own specialized techniques and utilizing state-of-the-art technology, was an invaluable experience. The patience, precision and dedication of the medical professionals at Shinshu University have left a lasting impression on me. I will cherish these lessons throughout my career.

The efficiency and meticulousness I observed in Japan will influence my approach to patient care and surgical techniques in my future career. Additionally, the emphasis on respect, teamwork and effective communication has reinforced the importance of fostering a positive working environment. I will carry these lessons with me as I continue my medical journey, striving for excellence in both clinical practice and patient interactions.
Beyond technical skills, this experience has deepened my appreciation for the role of cultural understanding in patient care. Working in a different healthcare system has taught me to evaluate diverse approaches to treatment and adapt them to improve my practice. I hope to contribute to global medical knowledge by integrating the insights gained at Shinshu University into my future work.

Consider taking a Japanese course before and be patient. I might take some time for students and doctors to open up to you!
