1. What made you come to train at Shinshu University School of Medicine, and how did you find the School through your stay?
I chose Shinshu University for its renowned transplantation center, particularly in living donor liver transplantation, and my interest in the Japanese healthcare system. Experiencing its differences from the German system was invaluable. Beyond medicine, I was eager to explore Japanese culture. My stay was highly enriching, and I found the university welcoming and supportive.
2. Please describe your training at the host department/lab.
I observed a wide range of operations, spending much of my time in the OR. The staff was always supportive, welcoming questions and providing explanations. The professional yet encouraging environment allowed me to gain insights into Japanese surgical procedures and hospital workflows.
3. What have you gained from your training and stay in Matsumoto, Japan?
I observed diverse surgeries and the Japanese approach to medicine, gaining insight into Japanese healthcare system's strengths. I also experienced the Japanese work ethic, emphasizing precision and continuous improvement. Immersion in the culture enriched my understanding of social interactions and professional etiquette. Outside the hospital, I explored Japan and its traditions.
4. How do you think you can apply those experiences to your future career?
The surgical techniques and workflows I observed will be valuable in my clinical practice. The Japanese commitment to excellence has inspired me to later integrate similar principles into my work. Additionally, experiencing a different medical and cultural environment has enhanced my ability to adapt and collaborate internationally.
