1. What made you come train at Shinshu University School of Medicine and how did you find the School through your stay?
Japan has a highly regarded healthcare system and I was eager to gain insights into its structure and clinical practice. I was particularly interested in exploring the differences between the German and Japanese healthcare systems, both in terms of surgical practice and overall organization. I especially liked the training environment at Shinshu University School of Medicine.

2. Please describe your training at host department/lab.
The first half of my training I spend in the Department of Neurosurgery and the other half in the Department of Gastro-Intestinal Surgery. During my training I mainly used to observe surgical procedures, joined ward rounds, conferences and case discussions.

3. Please list what you have gained from your experiences through the training at Shinshu University and the stay in Matsumoto, Japan.
During my training I gained valuable insight into surgical practice in both Neurosurgery and Gastro-Intestinal Surgery. Observing daily work in the operating room allowed me to learn about Japanese surgical techniques and intraoperative routines. I especially appreciated the strong sense of teamwork and the respectful atmosphere in the OR, including the supportive attitude towards me as a medical student.

4. How do you think you can apply those experiences to your future career?
These experiences will be especially valuable for my future career in terms of respectful teamwork and a supportive working environment. Observing how this is consistently practiced in the OR with a strong sense of respect across all professional roles is something I would like to carry into my future clinical work.

5. Advice to those who are interested in studying at Shinshu University
I would definitely recommend being openminded and proactive. It's a great opportunity to learn not only about medicine, but also about a different culture and way of working. Also don't hesitate to ask questions and engage with the team as everyone is very supportive and welcoming!
