Status of Residence
Those holding the status of residence "Student" are recognized as international students at Shinshu University. Students residing in Japan with the status of residence of "Dependent" or "Spouse/Child of a Japanese national" do not have the "Student" status of residence. If you do not have the "Student" status or you change to a different status of residence, you are not eligible for services provided for international students such as scholarships.
※Changes in status of residence from "Temporary Visitor" (Short-term Stay) to another type of resident status after entry to Japan are not basically approved without a special reason. If you changes in status, please bring a new residence card to the Educational Affairs Section of the faculty/graduate school.
When you have graduated or withdrawn from Shinshu University
After you have graduated or withdrawn from Shinshu University, you are required to leave Japan immediately or change your resident status even if your status of residence as a "Student" is still valid. This is because having graduated or withdrawn, you are no longer participating in "student activities".
Extension of Period of Stay
If students would like to extend their permitted term of residence, they need to apply for an extension at the Immigration Bureau which controls their residing area prior to the expiration date. Applications are accepted from three months prior to the expiry of the current period of stay. Please be careful the expiry of your period of stay and make sure you give yourself ample time to apply for an extension.
When your extension of period of stay is permitted, you can get a new residence card.
Once received it, please bring a new residence card to the Educational Affairs Section your faculty/graduate school.

Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted
International students coming to study and research at universities are assigned the status of residence "Student", and working is not permitted under this status.
However, Students residing in Japan with the status of residence of "Student" can apply
for and obtain Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted for part time job
in a defined range of time.
Those who work without this permission will be subject to punishment or deportation from Japan. It is also forbidden to work at any adult-entertainment business.
When newly entering Japan, you can apply for this permission at the airport.
