On January 14, 2025, representatives from 22 universities in South Korea visited Shinshu University.

This visit was an inspection related to the RISE Program (Regional Innovation System & Education) initiated by the South Korean government in 2023 to address the rapid decline in the 18-year-old population due to low birth rates. The RISE Program aims to foster human resource and develop research in collaboration with local governments, thereby revitalizing and innovating regional economies and societies.

The purpose of the visit was to study our university’s initiative and experience in regional revitalization and human resource development—such as COC+R, SPARC, and J-PEAKS— for reference for the system design of the RISE Program. Our university has contributed in these areas over a period of years in partnerships with local governments, businesses, and other universities.

The delegation, led by President Kim Young-Do of Dongeui Science University, was warmly welcomed by our President Nakamura, Executive Director Yasuda (Global Education), Vice President Yonekura (International Affairs), Vice President Hayashi (Enrollment Management), and Vice President Kim (Global Initiative).

During the visit, President Nakamura provided an overview of J-PEAKS, Executive Director Yasuda explained SPARC, and Vice President Hayashi introduced COC+R, TJ Alliance, and ENGINE. Following these presentations, a discussion was held involving students who had participated in these programs.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to deepen mutual understanding, as there are many similarities between our university’s initiative and contribution in regional and societal development and the RISE project. Both parties agreed to further strengthen their collaboration and work together toward regional co-creation and innovation.
