Profile of Departments

Department of NeuroHealth Innovation

We focus on the pathologic characterization, prevention, and treatment of intractable neurodegenerative diseases that are the cause of dementia and neuropsychiatric disorders and lifestyle-related diseases through approaches involving amyloidosis, neurosynapses, and sports medicine research.

  • 1. Neuronal and vascular amyloid deposition of a familial amyloid polyneuropathy patient
  • 2. Interval walking training
  • 3. Gene introduction to pyramidal neurons in layer 2/3 of the mouse neocortex.
  • Red represents the expression of Red fluorescent protein from Discosoma sp., green represents the expression of CASK, a causative gene of a type of neurodevelopemental disorder, and yellow represents neurons expressing both. The nuclei of all the neocortical cells were shown in blue. (Image from Mori et al. Molecular Psychiatry 2019)

Elucidation of pathophysiology on amyloidoses and establishment of novel therapeutic approaches
Message
We believe that further investigation of pathophysiology of amyloidosis may allow us to transmit new prevention methods of amyloid formation or seeds of new therapeutic approach for amyloidosis to the world. Our aims of the research are to elucidate the pathomechanism of development of amyloidosis and to establish the effective diagnostic procedures for early-stage amyloidosis patients.

Prof. Weidong Li, Deputy Dean, Research Management Division, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Vice Dean of Bio-X Institutes / Key Laboratory for the Genetics of Developmental and Neuropsychiatric Disorders (Ministry of Education), Assistant Director of Brian Science and Technology Research Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Dr. Li was graduated from China Medical University in 1996 and got his PhD from Shinshu University Schools of Medicine (Japan) in 2001. He did his post-doc researches at UCLA since 2002 and was promoted to the assistant researcher (research assistant professor) in the Department of Neurobiology in 2007. He was a Project Leader of the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) after he set up his lab in China since 2009. His lab focus on the mechanism and therapeutic of neuropsychiatric disorders by using animal modeling approaches. Recently, he also initiated a “China Super Brain Research Center” to investigate the brain function of the people with extraordinary abilities. Dr. Li won several prestigious awards, including Young Investigator Awards of National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) and the Children’s Tumor Foundation in US, Shanghai “Shu Guang” Scholar, Shanghai “Pujiang Talent” and Shanghai “Eastern Scholar”. Editor of Molecular Brain.
